Isla’s Holiday Apple Crisp

This dessert is a classic recipe to be enjoyed during the cold winter months in Montana. The apple cutting portion can be a great way to teach your kids about safe knife skills and the health benefits of apples. You can easily adapt this recipe to be dairy free by substituting the butter and milk for margarine and oat milk. This can be served warmed up or cold.

Equipment needed 

● Baking dish 

● 2 mixing bowls 

● Spatula 

● Peeler 

● Knife 

● Measuring cups and spoons 

Ingredients 

Crumble topping: 

● ¾ cup old-fashioned rolled oats 

● ½ cup all-purpose flour 

● ¼ cup brown sugar 

● ½ teaspoon baking powder 

● ½ cup salted butter or margarine, melted 

Apple filling: 

● 6 Granny Smith apples, thinly sliced and peeled 

● 3 tablespoons salted butter or margarine, melted 

● 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 

● 1 tablespoon lemon juice 

● 3 tablespoons 2% milk or oat milk 

● ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 

● ¼ cup brown sugar 

● ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon 

Directions 

1. Preheat oven to 375° F 

Crumble topping:

1. Combine old-fashioned rolled oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, and baking powder. Add melted butter and mix until well combined. 

Apple Filling: 

1. Peel and thinly slice apples. 

2. In a small bowl stir together melted butter and flour until smooth. Add lemon juice, milk, vanilla extract and stir. Stir in brown sugar, and cinnamon. 

3. Pour mixture over apples and coat evenly. Pour the apple mixture into a baking pan. Sprinkle crumble topping evenly over apples. 

4. Bake for 30 to 45 minutes or until apples are cooked. Remove from the oven and cool for 10 minutes. Serve and enjoy!
