A WONDERFUL YEAR OF GVF2S SCHOOL PROGRAMMING
The 2018 – 2019 school year marked another wonderful year of programming around the Gallatin Valley. All told, GVF2S educators taught 510 garden, classroom, farm field trip, afterschool and BOB Bus lessons to 3,609 students from 20 schools for a total of 9,533 student contacts.
Highlights of the year included:
The installation of a new greenhouse at Whittier Elementary School and subsequent planting, harvesting and taste tests with preschool – 2nd graders
Implementation of a food-based nutrition education pilot program in Health Enhancement classes at Hyalite and Meadowlark Elementary schools
A rancher and cow visit to Whittier, Monforton and Irving for beef Harvest of the Month
Cooking up delicious Harvest of the Month dishes like kale salad, carrot slaw, beet hummus and homemade butter in classrooms across the valley.
Cultivating wonder, curiosity, and brave adventurous tasters in every lesson!
“The lessons were awesome and it was great to watch my class become more knowledgeable about food and willing to try new foods.” – Kindergarten teacher
Our experiential education programs connect students to where food comes from and teach them how to make healthy choices for their bodies, for the natural world and for their community through the lens of local food.
Regardless of whether students are cooking in the classroom, planting seeds and observing pollinators and bugs in the school garden, tasting kale on the BOB Bus or harvesting carrots from a local farm during a field trip, GVF2S education programs build food literacy and healthy habits in the next generation. We can’t wait to reconnect with our program partners this fall!
